To improve your timing, practice keeping the racquet in front as if you were going to stop the ball.  Then hit up and across.

If you were to bend your arm with your biceps on contact with the ball, you’ll feel more force.

The angle of your racquet, rather than the trajectory of your swing, will determine the direction of your shot.

“Stalk” the ball with the racquet in front.
